The Training & Development
programmes are carried out by Jeremy Opperman & Associates.
“Meeting Disability” is a powerful,
practical and awareness changing experience. Its aim is not to cram delegates
full of forgettable “politically correct” data, but to get them to understand
the enigma that is disability. To empower them to be able to meet disability on
its own terms and to be able to appropriately and equitably interact with PWD’s
at work, in society and personally.
Delivery
Meeting Disability can be adapted to
cater for the needs of Executives, departmental Line managers and staff and
offered as a half or full day workshop.
Methodology
It is comprised of 4 modules. These form
a consistent theme .in any of its variations or forms.
1. Breaking the emotional
barrier. Getting to the heart of the matter.
- Establishing emotional buy in, in
order to ensure intellectual commitment.
2. Breaking the Ignorance Barrier.
Fact over myth
- Providing a “no holds barred
reality check”
- Examining a local and global
perspective.
- Exploring the realities and
pitfalls of:
- The Definition of disability.
- Legislation
- The Code of Good Practice
- Access regulations.
3. Beyond Barriers – Thinking
Laterally.
- Insight into employment equity and
how to incorporate Disability
- Highlighting the steps and
practicalities of 3 legs;
- Employment
- Investment.
- Procurement
4. Removing the Barriers.
Offering a strategic approach to ensure
sustainable disability equity, including:

Talks and short Seminars
Meeting Disability
Talk/lecture
Target: Delivery is adapted to the
audience, ranging from workers to executives.
Aim: To increase general awareness
of the realities of Disability and its existence and contribution within
society.
Time Frame: 45 min to 2.5 hours.
Meeting Disability
Sensitising seminars
Target: staff and management
Aim: To sensitise staff away from
stereotypic and prejudicial thinking regarding disabled customers and staff.
Most suited ahead of the appointment of a number of PWD’s in a specific work
area.
Content: In addition to the core
theme, focus includes: Reasonable accommodation and flexibility, prejudice,
teamwork, advancement and support.
Time Frame: 2.5 hours
Workshops
Meeting Disability Awareness workshop:
Target: Supervisory, management
level as well as middle to higher level staff.
Time frame: half to full day.
Content: (as above)
Meeting Disability, Executive Commitment
workshop.
Target: Executives, decision
makers.
Aims:
- To facilitate inclusion of executives
in this aspect of diversity.
- To make a business case for Disability
integration.
- To encourage informed and achievable
goal setting.
Content: Begins with basic
awareness theme. It is often combined with a presentation of the findings of the
assessment phase, Access Management attitudes and staff with Disabilities
experiences. Includes strategic commitment work shopping including next steps.
Time Frame: 1hour - 3 hour
Practical, Meeting Disability workshops
Target: Line managers within
specific departments, conducted separately. Includes; EE, HR, Corporate Social
Investment, Procurement, Facilities department, sales marketing etc
Aim:
- To facilitate the role played by line
management into; what is often wrongly perceived as an HR activity, thus
supporting HR efforts to involve line..
- To assist Line in understanding how
they can make a difference and participate, through their specific
departments, in broader equity activity.
- To show line how they can get a return
on investment in (disability) equity activity.
Content: Begins with basic
awareness theme. Explores how their departments can engage with Disability
professionally. Seeks commitment and goals from committed role-players.
Time frame: Minimum 4.5 hours with
follow up options.

focuses on raising consciousness levels towards Disability in the workplace,
customers and society. Anecdotal, informative and sensitising. Debunks myths
and stereotypes. |

“Meeting Disability” Practical
Disability Equity Workshop
 |
Aimed at middle management and heads of
Dept. A 4 hour interactive, out-comes based workshop, specifically targeted
at practical areas in Disability Equity. The workshop addresses fears,
challenges, barriers and presents opportunities and benefits.

Through a process of sensitising and
education, delegates are empowered to formulate strategies to optimise their
specific disability Equity activity e.g. Procurement, employment, social
investment, facilities management.

experience in the area of disability integration preparation within South
African organizations.

This
includes over 150 Access audits conducted since 2003, including Schools, Colleges, company offices, public facilities, apartment complexes, banks, wine-farms, factories and homes.. |

Over 1500 management and staff have attended more than 100 “Meeting Disability” workshops. |
